Plot

The story begins in the Enchanted Forest, where a guarded carriage carrying Prince Charming (Joshua Dallas

), is halted by a roadblock. When the Prince checks out the tree that was blocking the road, he notices the tree being cut on purpose, and as expected, was a setup for a robbery being committed by a hooded vagabond, who took the bag carrying the valuables, including the wedding ring. When the Prince sees the person take off, he follows the person and catches up with the thief and knocks them off the horse. As he examines the identity of the person, he uncovers the hooded scarf to discover its a woman... Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin). But before he could get a answer as to why she stole the valuables, Snow hits him with a rock, surprising and cutting him and she escapes. However, the Prince survives the attack and says that he will find her.

And find her he does; just as Snow stepped out of her hideout with the stolen goods, she is netted by the Prince in a trap. Snow begins to demand the Prince release her from the trap, but the Prince wants her to reveal what happened to the items and how he can retrieve them. Snow reluctantly agrees with him. The Prince, who reveals his name to be James, releases her so she can lead him to where she sold them. Along the way, the Prince discovers a wanted poster of Snow in her bag, but she claims to be set up by the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla

) because the Huntsman failed to capture her heart, although she also admitted that she did something to the Evil Queen that may be tied to their hatred for each other. As they reach a river, Snow once again tricks the Prince and escapes again, only to be captured moments later, this time by the Queen's henchmen, whose orders are to cut out Snow's heart and fetch it to the Queen. When the Prince sees this, he attacks the henchmen with his sword, killing two. But one gets away with Snow. The Prince then quickly dispatches a arrow, killing the runaway antagonist. Now that he had saved Snow, she decides to trust him, and agrees to lead him to the place where she sold the items.

As they reach a bridge that was damaged, Snow tells James that this was the place where she sold the items to a group of trolls. When she asked them if she can have only the ring back and was willing to pay them for it, the trolls became suspicious and discovered the wanted poster of Snow and got a whiff of James (as they see him as a royal and more valuable), leading to a battle that resulted in Snow coming to James' rescue by using fairy dust that she carried on her neck to turn the trolls into bugs. James was surprised that Snow saved him, but she wanted to repay him for saving her life before with the henchmen. As she handed him back the items, including the wedding ring, Snow looked at the ring, then placed it on her finger before handing it back to him as they went their separate ways.

) in her car reading a newspaper searching for a place to stay, which pleased Mary now that Emma had decided to stay and offered her a spare room at her apartment if she wanted it. The following day, Mary notices Henry (Jared S. Gilmore) looking at John Doe (Dallas) while they were setting up decorations at the hospital, which gives Henry an idea: convince Emma to use the fairy tale book to read the stories to him. But Emma comes up with a better solution: have Mary read the book to the comatose patient, of which Mary later agrees.

At the hospital, Mary reads the stories to the patient for a while, until his hand begins to move, shocking Mary. She then goes to get Dr. Whale to tell him that he might be responding, but the doctor covers his tracks by lying to Mary, since he later reports this to Regina (Parrilla). The next day, Emma, Henry and Mary stop by the hospital to see him, only to discover that he has left on his own and might be bleeding. And on top of that Regina and Sheriff Graham (Jamie Dornan) had shown up, since Regina is more interested in this person, claiming that she had found him, herself, on the side of the road unconscious without any memory of what or who he was. As Regina takes Henry home, Emma, Mary and the sheriff decide to investigate what happened, so they pay a visit to the security room, where they encounter the janitor Leroy (Lee Arenberg

), and the security guard, Walter, who was sleeping on the job (since he is actually Sleepy), and forgot to update the surveillance tape, which Emma takes care of and discovers that he went out into the woods.

As Emma, Mary, and the sheriff search the wooded area for him, they are joined by Henry, who knows why he left the hospital, which was to search for Mary. They later discover the patient lying near a bridge that reads "Toll Bridge" and as expected (just like what Snow did when she saved the Prince from the trolls at the bridge), Mary revives him. As they take him back to the hospital, Regina shows up with a woman who rushed into his arms, and tells them that the woman, Kathryn (Griffith), is his wife and that his name is David Nolan. This news devastates Mary (who ironically, was carrying a ring that was similar to the one Snow White had tried on), even as David looks at her as if he might know Mary. This made Emma more suspicious of Regina as to how and when the Mayor managed to find his wife and questioned why Kathryn never bothered to search for him before. Although Regina gave Emma her reasons regarding David by claiming that she had found past hospital surveillance tapes that had David mentioning Kathryn's name in his sleep, Emma still believed that Regina was hiding the truth, but took Regina at her word for then. Later that evening, Emma arrives at Mary's place and agrees to take up the offer of staying with the teacher.
