In its later years, the station was used by staff operating trains to and from the adjacent colliery. For this purpose, a large rail loader was built.

Today, only the platform edges are still in place. The station building is to be rebuilt at the Apedale Heritage Centre, materials from the old station have been shipped to the Heritage site and the current rebuilding programme is now in an advanced state.

On 21st August 2009, work on Silverdale station platforms was observed with brickwork being repaired or repointed.
