In the middle of the 19th century a turnpike

 road was built towards Bampton between 1826 and 1830. The road later became the B3227, joining Taunton

 and Bampton and is referred to by locals as the Wiveliscombe Road. Traffic levels on B3227 fell after an A class road was built to Tiverton to the south.

Historically, the village had a post office, garage, chapel, mill and pub. Today, all of these have been sold off to private owners, with the garage closing in 2010 and the site scheduled for redevelopment as four homes in 2011. The village pub, The Barleycorn House, reopened under new owners as the Barleycorn House Bed and Breakfast in 2006 with five bedrooms.

The Exe Valley branch railway line ran behind the village until its closure, following the River Exe between Stoke Canon

and Tiverton. Today, much of the track bed, bridges and other infrastructure from the railway can be seen behind the village and along the course of the line.

The village is sometimes confused with places of the same name in South Devon and Oxfordshire.
