. It is located on the Delhi - Saharanpur highway. It is around 100 km from Delhi, 38 km from Panipat and 65 km from Saharanpur. Shamli is known for its old sugar mill called Upper Doab Sugar Mill, and serves as a market town for surrounding villages.

History

During the first struggle for freedom in 1857 a lot of action was in the District. CHAUDHARY MOHAR SINGH of Shamli and SAIYED-PATHANS of Thanabhawan fought against the British and captured the Tehsil of Shamli. But later on the British army showed its brutality and recaptured the area. A lot of freedom fighters were done to death by them and this attempt was failed.
In addition to the 1857, the town witnessed important wars like the Battles of Panipat, and the battles during the rise of the Sikhs whose influence was felt as far as Shamli and Jalalabad.

 and Uttar Pradesh. The area has a fertile section, called 'Doab' meaning "a place lying in the alluvium of two rivers"--the Ganga and the Yamuna. The area is a major center of sugarcane cultivation and hence an area which attracts the sugar industries.

People

People belong to Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism and Christianity, Although the majority of the population is either Hindu, or Muslim.. The occupation of people predominantly include agriculture and retail. The standard of living is among the highest in the country due to its rich agriculture land as it lies in the doab between the Ganga and the Yamuna, the network of sugar mills in the area, and its proximity and easy access to Delhi and other important industrial towns like Panipat

Shamli is expanding at a very fast pace and real estate is sky rocketing in the town. It is a very hi-tech town, yet keeps its village influence and traditional culture very strong. The Municipal Corporation Website can be visited on the link http://nppshamli.in/statis.aspx.

Peace in Shamli that used to be the talk of the day is now seeming reality. People are very education conscious and value education a lot. There is a convent school in the town, St.Francis School, which is among the best schools spread in the whole district. In addition, Mother Land Public School and Silver Bells Public School are the most Acclaimed schools of this area. Due to a large number of academic facilities available, Shamli is a hub for primary and secondary education and there are many higher education institutes like engineering colleges coming up in the area.

According to the 2001 census, Males constitute 54 percent population and females 46 percent. Shamli has an average literacy rate of 64 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent, male literacy is 70 percent and female literacy is 57 percent. In Shamli, 15 percent of the population is under 6 years of age.

Places Of Interest

Belonging to Pandava Dynasty. It is also rumored to have been a place where Lord Krishna had a night halt during his last attempt to avoid Mahabharata and hence was named after him. One of the other fables describe Shamli as a place where Lord Hanuman rested during his journey to fetch 'Sanjivani Booti' from Himalayas for Laxman.

Sugar Mill of Shamli is one of the most famous mills in Uttar Pradesh and supplies its Sugar to a wide area spanning to Delhi

Shamli, in addition of these, is very famous for its food - Such as Chaat, Samosa, Chholey and various sweets.
