After Jaunpur, Shahganj has some of the biggest grain, grocery and general both wholesale and retail markets in the NE UP. Being well connected via Rail and Roads (Highways), it plays a major part in the local economy. The villages and towns are prosperous relative to many prominent districts of the state. It is also home to the only state owned sugar cane factory of the region. Shahganj is famous for its ramlila's and durga puja festivities and is home to the Shah Baba whose dargah is visited by many pilgrims.
