In 1999 Shady initially joined El-Ahly as a left wing back replacement for former international Mohamed Youssef. However, his limited dribbling abilities and high defensive awareness assigned him to the team's defense. Throughout the years, several Ahly coaches and trainers have used Shady as a regular starter, making him one of the most participating players in Ahly history along with Essam el Hadary. However, during a match in the 2006 African champions league round of 16, Essam was blamed for two goals scored in his net.
