Sekolah Menengah Teknik Alor Setar, or Alor Setar Technical School (ASTECH), is located in Bandar Simpang Kuala, Alor Setar and may be the oldest and controlled technical school in Malaysia. ASTECH is better known by local people as "Sekolah Teknik Lebuhraya" due to be confused with Sekolah Menengah Teknik Jalan Stadium (now known as Sekolah Menengah Vokasional Alor Setar). ASTECH also was choose by Technical Education Department as controlled technical school. In 2009, ASTECH declared as Sekolah Kluster Kecemerlangan.

Starting in 2011, student uniforms have changed from normal to special orange uniforms that is also worn by the students of Technical and Vocational Schools throughout Malaysia.

Achievements

2007

• ASTECH was champion in National Robotics Competition (NRC 2007) in Transporter Robot Category in Inter-Technic northern zone among 15 school.
• The ASTECH Robotics Team were selected to represent north zone to National Robotics Competition in Kuala Terengganu.

2008

• ASTECH was third place of Best Technical School in Malaysia.
