Amateur career

McDonagh had a successful amateur career during which he captured the New York State Golden Gloves in 1985. He beat Ike Padilla to win the finals and the championship. He trained out of B&B Boxing Club in Brooklyn, New York.

Cruiserweight

McDonagh spent the majority of his professional career as a cruiserweight. He debuted against Kevin Denson on December 10th, 1985. He won by TKO in the 2nd round.

Heavyweight

McDonagh moved up to heavyweight
