On November 30, 2000, he was sailing with two friends off the coast of San Francisco near the Golden Gate Bridge
, when a freak 26-foot wave swept him overboard in shark infested waters. A four-hour search was conducted in vain. Experts say Smith could not have survived more than two and a half hours in waters that cold. He was 45. The band began a tour in his memory the following year.
