History

The first American flag to be flown in what is now Kansas was raised near Scandia in 1806. It wasn't settled until 1868 by Swedes fleeing a famine in their native country, and was called New Scandinavia. The name was changed to Scandia in 1876, according to post office records. From there it became an important transition point for trade and travel in the early 1900s. It is now a small rural community, occasionally noted for its Neo-Nazi political chapter.
