Since inception, the Santa Margarita Handicap has been raced at various distances:

  • 6 furlongs : 1937
  • 8.5 furlongs (11/16 miles) 1938-1941, 1945–1948, 1953-1954.
  • 9 furlongs (1⅛ miles) : 1949-1952, 1955 present
