In March 2009, the newspaper strongly defended Lovelle Mixon, a convicted felon and eventual suspect in multiple rapes, including the rape of a child, who shot and killed 4 Oakland police officers without provocation, and who was himself killed by the police in self defense. The paper called the shootings "A heroic day of resistance against the police", under the headline "Police 2, Oakland residents 4", with the "2" referring to Mixon and Oscar Grant, a shooting victim of BART Police
