Simmons grew up in Adelaide. Before entering into radio, he was a zookeeper.

Simmons has also been much involved with the Melbourne Comedy Festival both as staff (Workshop Leader) and as performer.

Simmons currently appears in spots on triple j tv as well as on Triple J radio. He previously appeared on the week-day afternoon Triple J Dools show with Scott Dooley

Controversy

On December 7, 2007, when Triple J announced the new presenter line up for 2008, Robbie Buck announced that Simmons would be hosting both the Breakfast and Drive slots. When Simmons came on for Summer Nights Bitch, he announced that the hatred directed at him over the text line for this (false) announcement had "broken him", and after cutting to a song, stormed out of the studio, leaving Scott Dooley to cover for him for the rest of the shift. The original audio is hosted at JPlay.

Personal Life

On 13th of May, 2011, Sam received a goat tattooed on his bottom on live radio as part of a dare for his 24 hour- a-thon hosting Triple J. He also well known for his moustache, often mistaken for a real-life Mario from Mario Brothers, the computer game.
