The term Ropewalks is a relatively modern description to give prominence to the vicinity. Ropewalks takes its name from the craft of rope-making for sailing ships that dominated the area until the 19th century. There are a large number of historic warehouse buildings and it owes much of its character to the rope-making industry. Nowadays it has increasingly become the centre for Liverpool's night-time economy and creative industries.
