After his NFL career, Smith signed with the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League in 1984. Smith played in 6 games, starting 5 and caught 9 passes for 107 yards and 1 TD before being placed on injured reserve on May 30, 1984. Smith was released by the Invaders following the 1984 campaign.
