Originally erected in 1959, as the Apostolic Vicariate of Miri, the diocese was formed from the vicariate of Kuching.

In 1976, the Vicariate was elevated to a full diocese. In 1997, the diocese lost territory to form the Apostolic Prefecture of Brunei. The diocese is currently a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Kuching
