The School has a special status as a Science school as well as Maths and ICT and languages.

The School is home to the United Kingdom's largest School Council,with over 120 members who actively participate in policy making, welcoming visitors, conducting events and other aspect of school life as well as assisting Senior Management in making decisions. The School & its Council have been rated by OFSTED as Outstanding for four consecutive years.

The school was formed in 1957, in honour of Mayor Robert Clack and comprises the Triptons Secondary Modern School and the Robert Clack Technical College. The School is split into two sites which comprise the Lower School (Formerly Triptons Secondary Modern) and the Upper School (Formerly Robert Clack Technical College). The school is heavily oversubscribed accommodating just over 1,800 students.
