 at an early age, Arlook went to work for a local concert promoter and began booking
local bands while he was still in high school. He was the student body president at Antilles High School and was well regarded for his friendly and gregarious nature. Richard also played a pretty mean guitar.

He attended Emerson College

Graduating after 3 years in 1983, Arlook moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Hollywood. His first job was a stint as the contestant coordinator for the game show Tic Tac Dough. Shortly thereafter, he worked at Goldfarb Distributors, a foreign sales and distribution company where he helped to sell U.S. films internationally.

A major opportunity arose and he went to work as an assistant to Scott Rudin

, who was then the Head of Production at Twentieth Century Fox (1985).

In 1986, Arlook left Rudin to produce films on his own. He formed a production company called High Bar Pictures, and at the age of 26, he produced the feature film After Midnight for MGM.

He then joined The Gersh Agency
