, the township has a total area of 8.5 square miles (21.9 km²), of which, 5.9 square miles (15.4 km²) of it is land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²) of it (29.67%) is water.

The township spans the Susquehanna River, and contains the only part of Dauphin County on the west shore of the Susquehanna River. This area is known as the Island (even though it is a peninsula, not an island). This the area bounded by US 11&15, the Juniata River, the Susquehanna, and the old canal.
