The village's name has been the subject of many stories, the most popular of these are that there was once a huge battle near Belvoir Castle

 and the blood ran for a mile. The second of these is related to the clay around the village which is red and is such for a mile.

Redmile has been in a location in the majority of the second series episodes of the popular British comedy drama Auf Wiedersehen Pet, about a group of seven British migrant construction workers.
