Shalini Singh popularly known as Pop Shalini was one of the first teenagers to release an album (by the name of 'Shalini') when she was only 13. She has sung over 500 songs in various Indian languages for Indian films. She has sung for the likes of A.R.Rahman, Harris Jayaraj
, Illayaraja, Yuvan Shankar Raja
, Vidhyasagar, Himesh Reshamaiya and many others. Shalini's work with the composer Harris Jayaraj was notable as songs such as Yennai Konjam and Mudhal Naal struck a chord with the youth market more than expected
She then moved to Holy Angels Convent during Grade 1 and was asked to give solo performances for the famous TV channel Doordarshan
. On watching her performance on the TV channel, she was asked to join the famous theatre group Youngstars under Brian & Christerine Laul in Chennai to star in musicals like Annie, The Sound of Music, Joseph & His Technicolored Dreamcoat and many more. She was also asked to record for various jingles and has sung for over 600 advertisements till date.
On a survey done through the reputed 'India Today', Shalini was chosen among many musicians as one of 'The Faces of the Millennium' ,which featured great stalwarts like A.R.Rahman, Shubha Mudgal, Anoushka Shankar, Shankar Mahadevan and many others.
She is the first Tamil female artiste to start Tamil Pop and had a roaring success which brought her national acclaim when featured on "NDTV" as 'the child prodigy who has 'everything to make it big' and also when she was interviewed by Mtv, Channel V and Star plus on the Amul India Show as the "Rising Star of the Millennium".
She performs for events in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Punjabi etc and in any language that is required for the event. She not only performs for ticketed audiences but is also very well known as a good performer in corporate circles. She has performed in places like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Calcutta, Bangalore and various parts of South India, including shows in Australia, Denmark, Germany, France, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, South Africa, Canada, Dubai, Abu Dhabi , U.S.A. etc with artistes like Hariharan, Shanker Mahadevan, S.P.Balasubramaniam, Unni Krishnan, Shaan, Sadhana Sargam, Udit Narayan, Whigfield, Lucky Ali, Sukhbir, S.Janaki, P.Susheela, Mano, Unni Menon, Srinivas, Sukhwinder, Leslie Lewis and many others.
Shalini has sung in many Hindi remix albums including a few cross-over movies yet to be released. She is also a well known singer in Telugu with over 60 songs. She has rendered her voice in many Kannada and Malayalam movies too. Her repertoire also includes six songs in Guajarati and Punjabi which she sang for one of the greatest old-time composers M.S.Vishwanathanji. Apart from these languages she has sung in Bhojpuri, Mythili, Singhalese, Marathi, Bengali etc.
