. The name, sometimes spelled "Pontycymmer", is Welsh: pont signifies "bridge", while cymer signifies "confluence

Original signs for the village use the incorrect spelling of Pontycymmer, which has been accepted by the local population. Recent signage and postoffice records have been changed to the correct spelling, without consulting the residents.
At one side of the village, marking its boundary with Pantygog, the River Garw
is joined by the Nant Forch Wen. At the other side, towards its boundary with Blaengarw
, the River Garw is joined by the Nant Gelli Wern (marsh grove stream) at Ffaldau, the village square.
