History

Ponnamaravathy, is named after King Ponnar and his brother Amarar (Ammar), who were kings of Ponnamaravathy area. They came from Sevalur, which belongs to the Veera Maravar caste, to save the people in Ponnamaravathy. Before that period, robbers attacked people, looting and killing them. Nattuckal is the head and resident to king and his brother. They were killed by the British. The place they were killed by the British now belongs to Ponnamaravathy. Where Ponnar was killed, the Nattuckal people have placed statue at the centre of road in front of Nattuckal. Ammar was killed in front of a police station, and there a temple has been erected at the side of the road. Every year, Ponnamaravathy people celebrate festival for them for one week from starting on the first Friday in May. This is one of the biggest festivals in Ponnamaravathy.

, Ponnamaravathy is one of the biggest city in Pudukottai district. Ponnamaravathi had a population of 11,710. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Ponnamaravathi has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 68%. In Ponnamaravathi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

As of 2011, the Ponnamaravathy have developed into a business city. Most famous textile showrooms are available. Mainly Poorviga Alangara Maaligai,Atchaya Pattu Maligai, Aathikalathu Alangara Maligai, Sivanthi Silks, etc., are major role for increasing the local business.

Ponnamaravathy is a center of the city for around 70 villages are surrounded. This town is the people's main economical place.
