, Symon was allocated to the Royal Regiment of Australian Artillery (RAA). Following 16 years of service he became the commanding officer of the 1st Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. In 1997 Symon served with the United Nations in South Lebanon during a period of great tension between Hezbollah and the Israeli Defence Force. He has also taught at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst

Personal life

Symon is married to his wife of 25 years (Kate) and they have two teenage children. He gains pleasure running half marathons and in the company of his family and friends.
