Shiels began his senior career with his local side Monaghan United after coming the schoolboy ranks with the 'Mons'. Following a number of seasons with Monaghan in the First Division, he achieved promotion with club to the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2001. Despite relegation to the First Division in 2002, Shiels remained with Monaghan United until the end of the 2004 season before he joined Dublin City

. He made his Rovers debut on 23 July 2006 but his debut later caused controversy. Despite this points deduction he helped Rovers secure the First Division title at the end of 2006. Shiels remained with Rovers for the 2007 season but was restricted to only 11 appearances after playing no part in the first half of the season. Shiels was released by Shamrock Rovers at the end of the 2007 season.
