In 1722 Murray was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates

. However rather than practicing as a lawyer, he was determined to pursue a military career and eventually became a lieutenant-colonel in the Marines. In 1740 he retired from the army and returned to Scotland where he took up literary pursuits.

Murray died on the 3rd of August, 1778.
