It was established in 1802 by William Fullarton
, to provide housing for workers on the coal-fields of his estate. Fullarton's father had worked as an employee of the British East India Company
, and the town is nmaed for the city of Patna
in India

Patna lies south east of Ayr
on the A713 to Castle Douglas
at its junction with the road to Kirkmichael just north of Dalmellington
. Patna lies between the villages of Polnessan
and Waterside
and the River Doon
flows through it.
Patna Primary School is a general, non-religious school. A Catholic
primary school in Waterside, named St Xavier's Primary School, is attended by pupils from as far as Dalmellington
and Bellsbank, to Maybole
. A secondary school, Doon Academy, is located in the nearby village of Dalmellington
Patna enjoys a small library, a games hall, a football field, numerous country walks and a golf club. The river Doon is popular with local anglers.
There is an old ruin of a manor situated at the back of Patna, it was built in 1916.
in the 90's the land around the manor was used as a caravan park, it was a popular holiday destination.
Towards the end of the 90's the caravan park went bankrupt and shut down, the manor was just left and began to get broken in to by local youths, until one day it became victim to fire and burnt down, leaving it in ruins.
