The Palais Rohan took three years to build and was completed in 1774. It houses the town hall of Bordeaux and is one of the most celebrated examples of municipal architecture in the region. The building stands in Place Berland and dominates the centre of the old city.
In former times it was the Archbishop's Palace. Parts of it date back to medieval times though it has been improved at various times over the years. Its present appearance is due to renovations in 1771 by Archbishop Ferdinand Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan

(hence the name). Parts of it are now a Museum of Fine Arts.
