. This is due to to the closure of all middle schools in the county and a move from transfer to high school at age 13 to transfer at age 11. The proposals were approved by the Schools Adjudicator in February 2009.

Building is taking place on the present Pakefield Middle School site. The site was chosen because the majority of the children who will attend the new school live in the area, it was the largest site of the three possible middle schools available, access on foot or by cycle is established in the area and access can be improved if necessary. The site also allows building to take place whilst children continue to attend Pakefield Middle School. The government Office of the Schools Adjudicator approved the reorganisation proposal with the recommendation that integrated plans be proposed for the entire site, including Pakefield Primary School. Initial plans submitted in August 2009 dealt only with the primary school.

Building work on the site was delayed in May 2010 when Great Crested Newts, a protected species, were discovered on the site. As a result Year 9 pupils who were expected to transfer to the school in September 2011 are expected to be required to transfer to one of the other high schools in Lowestoft. Year 7 and 8 pupils will use the current Middle School buildings in 2011-2012 until the site can be completed. Building work was expected to be complete by September 2012, although funding has been problematic.

Opposition

There has been local opposition to the plan to build at Pakefield. Concerns have been raised over the size of the site and issues relating to traffic in the area as well as mixing of children from as young as 3 to 16 at the same location. Sites at either Elm Tree Middle School or Gisleham Middle School have been proposed as alternative sites. There are concerns over the funding for a £26.5m High School.
