History

The highway is itself a former alignment of Highway 69. In the current freeway conversion plans for Highway 69 through the Pointe au Baril region, a new bypass will be built and Highway 529 will assume the highway's existing routing through the community, extending the highway's length by approximately four kilometres to a new interchange with what will become Highway 400.
