North Tyneside Council is elected "in thirds" which means one councilor from each three-member ward is elected each year with a third year when the mayoral election takes place.

 was forced to resign due to allegations of possessing indecent images of children on his computer http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/2956207.stm. He was subsequently cleared of all charges.

This was also the last election before the wards in North Tyneside changed. Holystone, Monkseaton, North Shields and Seatonville were used for the last time, and replaced by Killingworth, Monkseaton North, Monkseaton South and Preston in 2004.

Mayoral Results
