 to the northern terminus at the North Carolina state line near Lake Gaston

 (Exit #168 off the interstate) along the way. Upon reaching Halifax, NC 903 will merge with NC 125 before running into US 301. The two highways will turn right onto US 301 and proceed south towards Enfield, passing over NC 561 along the way. NC 125 and NC 903 will soon break off US 301 at Ruggles and continue southeast to Scotland Neck and meet with US 258. The two highways will take a right onto US 258 passing through downtown where NC 903 will turn left and head southeast towards Hamilton, crossing NC 11 and NC 42 en route.

After passing through Hamilton and concurring NC 125 once again, NC 903 takes a more southerly route as it travels to Robersonville, meeting NC 142 a quarter of the way down. NC 903 will cross over US 13 and US 64 before entering Robersonville and then US 64 Alternate passing through downtown. As NC 903 comes into Pitt County, the highway will take a right at Beargrass Road near Stokes and cross over NC 30...now heading southwest to Greenville. NC 903 will join US 13 and NC 11 north of the city, then proceed south into Greenville as it crosses many more highways including US 264, NC 33, NC 43 and US 264 Alternate. The concurrency will drop US 13 and pick up NC 43 along the way to Winterville, where NC 903 will turn right and head in a westerly direction towards Snow Hill.

NC 903 will pass NC 102 at Roundtree and cross NC 123 at Maury before meeting with US 13 and US 258 near Snow Hill where the highway will once again merge. US 258 and NC 903 will break off at NC 91 as US 13 stays straight. NC 903 will keep straight as US 258 turns left to bypass Snow Hill. Upon reaching NC 58, NC 903 will take a right and then an immediate left. NC 903 will continue south to La Grange and overpass US 70 on the far side of town, where the highway will make an immediate right as it heads towards Kenansville. On the way, it will cross NC 55 at Whitfield Crossroads and merge with NC 111 at Albertson. The two highways will continue south to NC 11 at Kornegay where the concurrencies will switch with NC 903. Upon reaching Keanansville, NC 903 will break off and bypass the town to the east where it will merge once again...this time with NC 24, crossing over NC 50 and back over NC 11. Before entering nearby Magnolia, NC 24 will jump on I-40 (Exit #373 off the interstate) while NC 903 continues straight into town to junction with US 117. Still heading southwest in the direction of Garland, NC 903 will cross over US 421 at Delway...nearing its southern terminus. The highway will turn left at Lisbon Bridge Road and end a short distance further at NC 411.

History

NC 903 was formed in 1934, initially beginning from US 64 and NC 90 in Robersonville (now US 64 Alternate) south to Stokes and westward to NC 11 near Greenville. It was extended north in 1934 to NC 125 near Hamilton. Between 1964 and 1968, NC 903 was extended north again to US 258 in Scotland Neck. From there through 1990, NC 903 was extended south along NC 11 through Greenville to Winterville and then west to Snow Hill. During this period, the highway was extended north from Scotland Neck to US 301 in Halifax and eventually to US 158 in Littleton. In the other direction, NC 903 was extended from Snow Hill to Kenansville and then to US 117 in Magnolia. NC 903 was extended to its current northern terminus in 1990 and to its current southern terminus around 1995.
