The restaurant was founded in 1940 when a local dairy owner named Samuel Rector founded a small restaurant in Middletown, Rhode Island

. In the 1950s and 1960s, the restaurant was franchised and 33 restaurants were opened during the succeeding decades. Rector's family sold the restaurant in the late 90's. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2000, with all but 12 stores closing.
