History


In 1872, while misunderstanding the ideal location he was selling, Omaha banker Herman Kountze

 sold the land required to develop Neligh. He was not aware it would make the ideal county seat, which Neligh eventually became.

, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.5 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.5 km²) of it is land and 1.04% is water.

Until 1992, Neligh was served by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. The line, known as the "Cowboy Line", ran from Norfolk to Chadron, NE. The line was removed and "railbanked". It is now part of the longest bike trail in Nebraska.
