 programs. Membership in the NAIH consists of prive and public colleges and universities across the United States. The NAIH allows colleges and universities outside the USA as members. For the 2011-12 academic year, the NAIH has 20 member institutions.

, a group of individuals were inspired to start a collegiate ice hockey association after reviewing documentations on the cost of joining existing associations. The group sought out an experienced individual to discuss the formation of an association. Several individuals began contacting schools to form the National Association of Intercollegiate Hockey. National Association of Intercollegiate Hockey is set to begin play in the fall of 2011. The goal of the association is to capitalize on the growing demand for a competing association. The driving factor behind the formation of the NAIH is the rising cost of being a member of another association. The first season is set out to be a "test season" to determine the future of the association.

The NAIH follows the NCAA Division I rules of play with the exception that former Major junior players are eligible unlike the NCAA or ACHA
