Nathan Mugisha replaced Francis Okello as commander of AMISOM on 7 July 2009.

Under his command AMISOM repelled the "Ramadan Offensive" launched by al-Shabaab in during August 2010. In February and March 2011 they made significant progress in Mogadishu
