In 2001 Brajesh Singh
ambushed Ansari's convoy on the Mau-Lucknow highway. In the shootout that
followed, Mukhtar Ansari lost three of his key men and Brajesh Singh was
critically injured and declared dead soon after. Mukhtar Ansari was 'crowned'
the undisputed king of eastern U.P. (Purvanchal).
However, a year later Brajesh Singh was spotted in the Mau-Ghazipur area

Politics

Mukhtar Ansari has been elected as an independent MLA consequently thrice from the Mau Sadar seat in Uttar Pradesh. He contested 2009 loksabha election from Varanasi seat on BSP ticket and lost to Murali Manohar Joshi of BJP by a low margin of 17211 votes (MUKHTAR ANSARI, BSP - 185911 votes & DR. MURLI MANOHAR JOSHI, BJP -203122 votes-/www.indian-elections.com). Later he was expelled from the BSP after the loksabha election. Now he has floated a new party in eastern Uttar Pradesh, "Quami Ekta Dal" & will contest 2012 assembly elections.
