Hamidullah was the last remaining citizen of the erstwhile state of Hyderabad (now in Andhra Pradesh, India) and never took the citizenship of any other country contrary to popular belief; but was classed as a 'Refugee of Hyderabad' by the French who allowed him to stay in Paris, exiled from his homeland after its annexation by the Indian Government (1948).
