    Historical Significance

    • Venezuela became the second territory, after the Dominican Republic, to win a second Miss Latin America title.
    • Venezuela last placed in 1987.
    • Brazil placed for the fourth consecutive time, and achieved its highest placement up to that point. Brazil would later win in 1994, 1998 and 2001.
    • Ecuador last placed in 1984. With a second runner-up, this was Ecuador's highest placement up to that point, and would remain so until 1998.
    • El Salvador, the defending territory as well as the host territory, became the second defending territory, after the Dominican Republic (first place in 1985 and 1986) to have a finalist.
    • Colombia last placed in 1987. Because the country had not participated in 1989, it made them the first territory to have a 100% placement rate at any point.
    • Panama, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica also placed in 1989.
    • Mexico and Argentina last placed in 1987.
