Founded in 2003 by retired scientists from Dow Chemical’s Union Carbide
subsidiary, MATRIC was established along the lines of the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) at Research Triangle Park
, North Carolina
to preserve the science and engineering talent recruited to the Charleston
area by the chemical industry. MATRIC has emulated RTI by spinning off several companies and licensing new technologies to other companies, as well as completing several research projects for government agencies.
MATRIC has relocated to the five-story laboratory
Building 740 at the South Charleston Technology Park. In 2008 MATRIC announced the formation of an engineering subsidiary, Mid-Atlantic Technical Engineering LLC (MATE), to serve the chemical and gas production industry in West Virginia
