Rose was educated at Loughborough Grammar School

at Durham University
(where he is now a trustee) and Magdalene College, Cambridge
.
He played for Leicester Tigers
at the age of 17, Cambridge University (winning 3 Blues and captaining the side in the 1980 Centenary Varsity Match
), Coventry R.F.C.
and Harlequins. He represented the Barbarians
and is the only Englishmen to have been selected to play for The French Barbarians.
Internationally, Rose played for England schools Under 19's in 1975 and 1976, England U23 and made his full England debut in the 1981 Five Nations Championship
championship against scoring a try in a 10 - 6 win. After 1982 he was omitted from the national side until he was selected for the 1987 Five Nations Championship
