Keys won her first-ever U.S. Open match on Aug. 29, 2011, beating world No. 111 Jill Craybas 6–2, 6–4 in the first round. She had an excellent opportunity to win her second on Aug. 31, when she won the first set against world No. 27 Lucie Šafářová

Keys won a spot in the 2011 U.S. Open by beating Beatrice Capra in the finals of an eight-player wildcard playoff held at The Tennis Center at College Park (Maryland) on Aug. 21, 2011. Keys first became interested in tennis because she liked tennis dresses, according to a video interview she conducted with World Tennis Magazine in August of 2011. She also said that she is a big fan of Roger Federer
