On her personal starts on the 100 and 200 metres backstroke, Melien didn't made it to the final; she finished in 12th and 19th position. Melien swam much of her amateur career for the Ajax Aquatic Club in Ajax, Ontario. Many of her individual club records still stand today. ( http://ajaxswimming.ca)
