History

In 1870, a four-room, two story brick school building was completed and occupied. It later became part of Lorain High and was known as The Union School. Lorain High was first established in 1875 as a two year program in what was once Union School. The first graduating class of two boys and one girl graduate from the school in 1879. Many additions were made to the school over the years. The first Scimitar, Lorain High's yearbook, was published in 1906.

In 1924 a tornado ravaged Lorain and Lorain High was used as a morgue for tornado victims. The Red Cross set up tents on the school's north lawn.

Lorain High was closed in June 1995 and was reopened that September as Lorain Middle School until 2005 when it was closed permanently. The Middle School retained the high school mascot and colors. The building was demolished in 2010 by the Lorain City School Board due to financial problems, against the protest of many of its citizens and former school alumni.

Its mascot was the Steelmen which was depicted by a cartoonish robot until the late 1980s which was then replaced by a steel worker. It's school fighting colors were Black & Gold with the graduation colors being Navy and White. Many notable people graduated from the former Lorain High School including comedian Don Novello

In the fall of 2010 Lorain City Schools decided to merge all high schools into one and this new high school is now the new Lorain High School. It is currently housed at the former (Lorain) Admiral King High School. There is great controversy in Lorain about the actual site that the new Lorain High School will be built upon near the Black River and it is undetermined when ground breaking will actually occur and if it will be in the destination the school board has currently chosen. It's colors are Navy and Silver and the mascot is the Titans.

There are many websites and Facebook pages devoted to this former school and "Steelmen Pride" is still very much alive.

School Song

The school song was as follows:

On the shore of old Lake Erie
Where the coal and iron meet

Stands our dear old Lorain High School

Full of joy and memories sweet

And the spirit that we find there

Growing up so strong and true

Brings us back to friendships made there

L.H.S. we stand for you

When our days of school are over

And a name we try to make

Back to us will come those memories

Of the high school by the lake

Then we'll long to see the teachers

Who have helped us on our way

Oh, we love you, Alma Mater!

L.H.S. by you we'll stay

Lorain High School, Lorain High School,

We'll always think of you

And no matter what befalls us

Lorain High we'll ever be true
