Littlefield served as a high school from the mid-1950s until the early 1990s. At that time it became a middle school and high school students began attending nearby Lumberton High School. The mascot for Littlefield was the "Hornets." The facilities, located on NC Highway 41 North, were named in honor of B. E. Littlefield, the superintendent of Robeson County Schools at the time of the school's construction.
