Originally Mayors were elected annually, later becoming every other year. In 1976, the four year term took effect and has been used since.

There have been 28 mayors of Barberton, serving 30 distinct terms. The longest term was held by Randy Hart, who served for 15 years. Catherine Dobbs became the first woman mayor (and , only) in 1956. The current mayor is Robert Genet, who took office at 2:00PM on December 31, 2007.
