, in 1986. The founders realized that their campus did not offer an organization that met the needs of women from minority backgrounds. They were interested in forming an organization that would not only act as a family away from home, but that would also bring together women from various backgrounds and incorporate the principles of self improvement, scholastic excellence, civic responsibility and leadership. Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority became a reality on October 24, 1986, when twenty-seven women sharing the same interest, beliefs, and goals came together. Since then, 22 additional chapters have joined, with the most recent chapter at University of California, Irvine

on May 29, 2010. Lambda Sigma Gamma was officially incorporated and recognized as a service-based, nonprofit corporation by the State of Delaware on April 3, 1998. Subsequently, their sisterhood is also known as Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Incorporated. Over the years, Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Incorporated has grown to include thousands of women from different creeds, ethnicities, cultures, social-economic backgrounds, physical talents, mental abilities, and sexual preferences.

Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Incorporated is an academic, community, social, and multi-cultural sorority. The organization is a solid network of women in higher education, who have chosen to unite in order to enhance their college experiences. Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Incorporated was founded with the purpose of creating a support system for women once they have entered the university. Through the support that its members offer each other, LSG has developed a strong, safe and loving environment where friendships grow, characters build, knowledge is shared, and a multicultural sisterhood is created. The national membership is estimated at 1600 as of March 1, 2008.

Civic Responsibility

While Lambda Sigma Gamma remains active in a wide variety of philanthropic services, the sorority’s main objective is to bring awareness and support to early Education. Their responsibility and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children continually guides our efforts. They do this by giving back to their communities via scholarships, fundraisers, donations, contributions, partnerships, volunteerism and other various philanthropic programs at each of our respective chapters.

In 1989, Lambda Sigma Gamma adopted the California Head Start Program as its official national philanthropy. At the local level, they encourage each individual sister to spread their volunteerism to numerous causes and non-profit organizations past their undergraduate years.

Scholastic Excellence

Lambda Sigma Gamma continuously promotes sound learning and their members constantly strive to further their intellectual development throughout their lives. They are committed to seeing that all of their members achieve academic success, therefore each sister is challenged to strive for scholastic achievement through setting high academic goals, regular classroom attendance and class participation. Chapters focus on attaining these efforts through incentive programs, study buddies, library hours, recognition, tutoring, alumnae mentoring and study skills education.

Philanthropy

The official philanthropy of Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Incorporated is The California Head Start Program. Sisters host Head Start week once a year in which they participate in activities with the children of Head Start. Sisters also donate Thanksgiving baskets during the month of November and host a Christmas toy drive during the month of December. Along with the California Head Start Program each chapter has a local philanthropy that they donate their times to.
