LATAM Airlines Group, or LATAM, is a new airline group formed by the merger of LAN Airlines

 and TAM Airlines. The two airlines plan to continue flying with separate brands in the short term, but expect substantial synergies from merging their operations. The merger is expected to be complete by mid-2011. Enrique Cueto, the current CEO of LAN, has been announced as the CEO of the new company; Mauricio Rolim Amaro, currently vice-chairman of TAM, would become chairman of LATAM.

The two airlines signed a non-binding agreement on 13 August 2010, and a binding agreement, was signed on 19th of January 2011.

Their main competitors upon the South American continent will be Synergy Group

Governments' approval

Latam agreement was approved with 11 restrictions by Chilean authorities on September 21, 2011. These include transferring 4 pairs of slots at São Paulo-Guarulhos to competitors interested in operating flights to Santiago de Chile

, restricting increase capacity on flights between Brazil and Chile, and opening code-share possibilities and fidelity program membership to interested competitors. Brazilian authorities are still analyzing the agreement. In relation to other countries served by both airlines, Germany, Spain, and the United States have approved, and Argentina is still analyzing the agreement.

Fleet

In August 2010, LAN and TAM said they had a combined fleet of over 240 aircraft, with more than 220 additional aircraft currently on order. Synergies are expected to lead to network expansion rather than reduced orders.
