Much of the population is rural and the main economy is based on agriculture with some business also relating to restaurants, education and bars. The income is in the middle range. Much of the population left after the war in the 1950s. The settlement features a restaurant by the sea and several attractions. Olive groves cover the area around Kitries and hills eastward. The area is nicknamed the "Dark Taygetos" because the sun is hidden by the mountains until the mid morning hours. Kitries also features a lighthouse on Cape Kitries. The ERT
