 band scene when she was fourteen but then moved onto the acoustic music scene where she built herself a reputation with well-crafted original songs. In 2000 McGee won the Northwest songwriting competition organised by the Buskers' Ball.
McGee has also been involved in environmental protest, including the campaign against Manchester Airport's second runway.

McGee usually performs in a duo with Mat Martin.

McGee and Martin formed the Hobopop Collective in 2007 as a response to their experiences with the music industry. The ethic that governs hobopop productions is one of respect and genuine enthusiasm for music and people.

In January 2011, Kirsty McGee was nominated for The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards under the Live Performance category for No.5.
